Have you ever wondered how certain brands are able to market and sell their “Oxygen Barrier” for less than half the price of others? The answer is because not all Oxygen Barrier products are created equal, and anything can be marketed as an “Oxygen Barrier”, however there are only a few TRUE oxygen barriers on the Forage protecting market.

The Silage protection market offers two different options when it comes to an “Oxygen Barrier”:

• a TRUE Oxygen Barrier: This option must include an Oxygen Eliminating Property such as EVOH or Nylon, where it stops the transfer of oxygen from penetrating your Silage Pile. This is often times the most costly feature of the film, and a key give away for what you are purchasing!
• An Underlayment Film: This option does NOT have an oxygen eliminating property, but still conforms snug to the contours of your Silage Pile. These types of film are often times marketed as an Oxygen Barrier, and sold for a fraction of the price by suppliers Up in the Northern region or High and Techy manufactures overseas.

Both options can mimic eachother and confirm snug to the contours of your pile, giving off the implication that they are the same. They can often times be marketed as the same by their supplier. Be sure to ask your supplier what the OTR (Oxygen Transfer Rating) is for the Barrier that you are looking to purchase.

An underlayment film is a terrific cost savings, short-term solution for a producer looking to add a little extra protection to their silage pile without the costly investment of a TRUE Oxygen Barrier. When offered as a 2-in-1, you will see the thickness noted on the packaging that rather than an 8.0 mil thickness, it’s offered as a 6.6 mil thickness. This means that our signature combo film is composed of a 5 mil Bunker Cover Tarp and a 1.6 mil Underlayment film.
